THEN & NOW!!!

I thought it would be fun to compare a picture of my hair as a natural child, permed adult, and natural adult. My hair has always been pretty healthy and long according to real world standards.
1994: I was 9 years old and still natural. My mother simply blow dried my hair and put it in a ponytail.
Hanging down it was somwhere between MBL and WL.

Oct. 3, 2008: I was about 6-7 wks post relaxer. My mom gave me a flexirod set for my wedding.
When straighten, by hair was about 1.5 inches past APL.

Oct 2010: This was a chunky twist out done on dry hair.
I was 1 yr 8 mnths post relaxer and 1 yr 1 mnth post bc.

Jan 2011: This was an old coil out pulled into a puff.
I was 1 yr 11 mnths post relaxer and 1 yr 4 mnths post bc.
I think, I'm about .5-1 inch from APL now.
I wish I had pictures showing my hair's natural texture as a child and while relaxed as a child. If I find some I will update this post. My goal now is to keep my hair as healthy as possible and eventually get back to MBL or longer.

Star Andrews Whips Her Hair on Ice

I just watched this video and it was absolutely adorable. Starr Andrews, a 9 year old amateur ice skater does a routine to Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair". She embodies the essence of the young singer from her funky fashion sense to a play on her creative hairstyle.  Not only is Starr a little cutie, her routine was genius. This young lady is definitely a star in the a making.  Hope you enjoy.

Changes for 2011!

It's been a while since I have updated. I hope everyone had a happy holiday. In the upcoming year, I will be making a few changes to my blog, hair care and fitness routine. These changes are as follows:
  1. Quarterly length checks (every three months). The first one is coming up by the end of next week.
  2. Bunning 3 or more days per week. I think that this will really help with my retention...fingers crossed.
  3. Product reviews.
  4. Monthly weigh-ins rather than twice a month.
I believe these are all the changes I have so far.

2010-2011 Winter Hair Regimen

I have quite a few products in rotation at the moment, but my actually regimen is pretty simple. I am very frugal...I absolutely love cheap products!

Current Products

Shampoos:  Suave Kids 2 in 1 Shampoo, ORS Olive Oil Creamy Aloe Shampoo

Deep Conditioners: ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Pak, Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose

Regular Conditioners: Suave Natural Tropical Coconut Conditioner, Herbal Essence Hello Hydration

Leave-ins/Moisturizers: Palmers Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Milk, Creme of Nature Lemongrass & Rosemary Leave-in

Stylers: ORS Lock & Twist Gel, Ecostyler Gel (Olive Oil), Fantasia Heat Protectant (serum)

Sealants: EVOO, Unrefined Shea Butter

Protein: 1 egg whipped a cheap conditioner and melted shea butter

Hairstyles
  • Straighten (once a month)
  • Mini Twist
  • Twist/Braid/Bantu Knot Outs (done on damp, dry, or previously straighten hair)
  • Buns (high/low/side, done on an old set or straighten hair)
I wash my hair with shampoo every two weeks and generally co-wash during the off week.  I deep condition with every shampoo wash and  do a protein treatment once a month before I straighten. I usually apply leave-in conditioner and seal ends, then put my hair in two cornrows to allow it to stretch and partially dry before beginning to style.

Southern Tease Bun

Last night I fell asleep without my satin bonnet, I know, that's a big NO NO, but it happens.  Needless to say, my curls from the bantu knot out was in total disarray.  So I decided to do my version of the Southerntease bun, but place it slightly off center to the right. I really like how it came out.
